If you're based in the Netherlands and considering a career change, you're in a good position. The Dutch system has strong support for people in transition.
UWV — Your First Stop
If you've been laid off, register with the UWV immediately. You may be entitled to a WW-uitkering (unemployment benefit) while you retrain or job search. Don't wait — there are deadlines.
Retraining Support
The Dutch government offers several subsidies for retraining: STAP-budget provides up to €1,000 for certified courses. Some municipalities offer additional support through the Participatiewet.
Skilled Trades in NL
If you're considering a trade: in the Netherlands, you'll typically need an MBO-level diploma. Organizations like SBB (Samenwerkingsorganisatie Beroepsonderwijs Bedrijfsleven) can guide you through apprenticeship options.
Freelancing (ZZP)
The Netherlands is very freelance-friendly. You can register as a ZZP'er at the KvK (Chamber of Commerce) in about an hour. Tax rules and the DBA law (Wet DBA) are worth understanding before you start.
